The raucous laughter emanating from the reception area of the Marina Lounge gave promise of an evening to remember for the Four Wrinkled Dears. Clarissa, Millie and Hilda stood huddled together on the grey and purple swirled carpet, waiting for Ethel, who had quickly diverted to the ladies’ loo upon their arrival. The short walk from their chalets to the venue had clearly been a little taxing on her waterworks after too many glasses of wine during the afternoon.

Clarissa smiled to herself. They had indulged in such fun after Millie had dragged her faithful tattered wool bag into their chalet, and over the following few hours, whilst enjoying a particularly nice nutty sherry and several glasses of red wine, their needles and hooks had worked tirelessly to create costumes and dreadlocks that promised to be the envy of everyone attending the Rasta party. She was so looking forward to a night of fun and laughter, and maybe a little bit of devilment, too.

‘Ta-daa…’ Ethel bounced out of the powder room, trailing a multi-coloured chiffon jacket in her wake. She flicked the vibrant wool strands that had been attached to her own hair with a couple of kirby grips. Courtesy of an old necklace, she had also incorporated colourful beads at the ends of each dreadlocked tress and had then passed the rest on to Millie.

Her friends clapped their hands in admiration. Millie giggled loudly. ‘Ooh, you do look wonderful, Eth! We are going to be the talk of Harmony Hollows Resort tonight.’

‘What do you think of my harem pants, then?’ Hilda gave a twirl to show her best angle, the slight breeze picking up the fabric and making them billow out like a balloon.

Ethel, her sharp wit having returned after so many weeks of sadness, had her response ready and waiting. ‘Like you’ve gone overboard on the sprouts and your Gaviscon has failed you, Hilda my dear…’ She laughed.

Not to be outdone, Millie joined in, flinging her head around in wild abandonment, thoroughly relishing the sound the beads at the end of her hair made, as they rattled and clacked together. As it had been her wool they had used, she had taken the opportunity to ensure her dreadlocks were longer and more vibrant than anyone else’s. They whirled out like helicopter blades, swirling around her head. ‘Ooh look at me…’ she jauntily trilled as the momentum carried her across the carpet.

‘Millie, watch out!’ Clarissa tried to make a grab for her, but her reactions were a little too late. Millie’s colourful strands made one last bid for freedom before hooking themselves around the ornate light fitting on the wall. Her head jerked sideways as she stumbled backwards.

‘Don’t move, dear, I’m coming…’ Hilda and her pants billowed their way across the expanse that Millie’s exuberant dance had left between them, desperate to assist her friend. ‘Oh my goodness, just look at you!’ she exclaimed.

Millie grunted. ‘I would if I bloody could, but I’m just a little preoccupied at the moment.
